Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, the center of Kiev region spread over 35 km from East to West and 42 km from the North to the South along the picturesque banks of the Dnieper river. The city has unique landscapes and is famous for its architectural ensembles. Kiev-Pecherska Lavra
On the slopes of the Dnieper river rises the most outstanding sightseeing of Kiev - KIEVO-PECHERSKAYA LAVRA, which was built almost one thousand years ago. This church construction is not only a wonderful creation of old Russian architects. It is a holy place, second Jerusalem, for many Orthodox Christians.
Sophia Cathedral
Scientists call Kiev Sophia cathedral an absolute example of the synthesis of art, which reflects the glory and grandeur of Kiev Rus of XI century, when this cathedral was built by order of the grand duke Yaroslav Mudryi. During the last centuries the sacred Sophia was the center of spiritual, political, social and cultural life of the Olg Rus. Many dukes were crowned here, a lot of foreign ambassadors were met there, important political international agreements were signed.
Vladimir the Baptist
A great monument to duke Vladimir, who is considered the Baptizer of the whole Rus, stands on the slope of Vladimirska gorka( hill) over the Dnieper. Thanks to him Christianity was adopted in Old Rus in 988. A bronze statue to the duke Vladimir was set in 1853.
Mihailovski Zlatoverhiy Cathedral
The indication of the spiritual rebirth of Ukraine became the restoration of Kiev Mihailovski Zlatoverhiy Cathedral. Starting from the XII century its grandeur gilded cupola inspired the warriors - protectors of of KIevskaya Rus. Although in the 30th of the last century the cathedral was destroyed during another communist atheistic campaign. In 2000-2001 Zlatoverhiy Cathedral was restored by caring hands of architectures according to the old drafts. Now it is going to charm everyone by its beauty
Golden Gates
This fort construction, built in 1037, served as the border of the ancient Kiev during the governing of duke Yaroslav Mudryi and for many year afterwards it was a protection barrier for the conquerors. In 1983 the Golden Gates were absolutely restored; now it is a historical museum, open for everyone who want to feel the atmosphere of the old Russian middle ages.
Vladimir Cathedral.
Built in 1882 this Orthidox Cathedral has a few characteristics of The Neobyzantian architectural style. The inner decoration made by Russian artists, is a great value of art. The authors of mosaic were well-known Venetian artists. The most wonderful thing in the Cathedral is choral singing, which we recommend to listen to. The Cathedral is located on one of the cental street of the city - Taras Shevchenko boulevard
Mariinski Palace.
Gorgeous palace in blue and pastel colors is in the wonderful park, it was constructed under sketches of the great Intalian Bartolommeo Rastrelli in 1750. The construction of the Palace was managed by a Russian architecture Ivan Michurin. This extremely beautiful building was Kiev residential place of the tsar family. Today it is a place of official routs, presidential meeting, international conferences. Mariinsky Palace is open for tourists only with the previous booking.
Khreschatic
The main and the most favorite street of Kiev residents - Khreschatic - was recently restored and now it is one of the most beautiful places of the capital. Kreschatic combines the features of the business downtown and a charm of ancient historical architectural ansembles of 18th century. The street leads to the main square of the city - Maidan Nezalejnosti (Independence square), the most popular place for meetings. On weenends Kreschatic becomes the pedestrian street, which gives the guests and the residents a great opportunity to walk along.
Andreevski Spusk(Slope) and Podol
Yes, Andreevski Spusk in Kiev is like a Montmartre for Paris or Old Arbat for Moscow. It is famous for its bohemia atmosphere. Art people state that the aura of the street inspires them for art. You can see artists here in any weather; the demonstrate their works, you can buy the best souvenirs of Ukrainian artists and you will be able to listen to the street musicians. The pearl of Andreevski slope and the whole Kiev is Andreevskiy Church, one the symbols of the city.
